Alinsky edition by DK Goldberg Politics Social Sciences eBooks
This short ebook, seemingly self-published, is well worth reading for conservatives who are frustrated by losing all the time and watching their cherished institutions go down the drain. The author nicely summarizes the late community organizer Saul Alinsky's view of how radicals can tactically implement a Gramscian strategy for the transformation of society. Gramsci was an Italian communist theoretician who proposed that communists cannot hope to change advanced societies by blood-in-the-streets revolution. Instead, radicals must infiltrate the key institutions - schools, government, art, journalism, churches, the military, etc. -- and transform each from within. finally attaining a "critical mass' for the collapse and replacement of the old Christian social order by a socialist materialist one. Alinsky proposes that cynical and manipulative tactics are best and fully justified by means-end reasoning. For example, leaders of demonstrations can route marchers into areas where bystanders will attack them, or where police will be obligated to block them. If the police can be provoked into attacking them on camera they can use the film to gain sympathy.Another example is the plan of doing a study, declaring a crisis, and demanding legislation, the outcome of the study having been decided ahead of time. The danger for radicals is that the public will catch on; it helps if the news media are naive or pretend to be.For conservatives, understanding Alinsky's methods will enable them to grasp why the left has gone from success to success regardless of which party is in office. The author suggests that conservatives can turn the tables by emulating Alinsky's approach. For example, he suggests they unapologetically attempt to gain control of the GOP and throw out the Wall Street crowd that is both unsympathetic to their agenda and unpopular with the public. His vision of the party is populist: the GOP should embrace the white lower to middle class Americans who presently vote for them but get little in return. His proposal is not racist, however. He also feels the party should reach out to a variety of minority group members whose concerns are not being addressed by liberal politics. A stimulating little discussion.
